Per request, the "cat fight" between Rosario and Dragina. For the record, this does NOT happen in continuity, it was only a test combat to teach Xander the system, and we were playing it up for fun.

Back to Rosario's character sheet

(snip some unrelated chatter)

Rosario: So, want to have another brawl for combat practice?
Dragina Vorota: Sure!
Rosario: Cat fight :-)
Dragina Vorota: /my/ handsome Inqisitor! *giggle*
Rosario: OK, be gentle with me on the GM side, I'm still ...LOL
Rosario: ...getting a good handle on the system (as opposed to an OK one)
Rosario: First, we roll initiative, Panache
Rosario's initiative
Damage RollRolling 2d10.
Results: 9 4 for a total of 13.
Rosario: I go on 4 and 9
Rosario: Roll 2 for your Panache...
Dragina's initiative
Damage RollRolling 2d10.
Results: 3 4 for a total of 7.
Rosario: Ah, I get ot explainn ties :-)
Dragina Vorota: Hrm... Please?
Rosario: You go on 3, we both go on 4, and I go again on 9...
Rosario: However, when two people go in the same phase, the one with the higher total goes first.
Dragina Vorota: OK... so it's me, you, me, you...
Rosario: It favors the person with the higher Panache.
Rosario: Yep.
Rosario: I don't think we convered active defences, either.
Dragina Vorota: BTW, where does movement figure into combat?
Dragina Vorota: Not really.
Rosario: What kind of movement?
Dragina Vorota: As in getting close, keeping a distance...
Rosario: I think any significant movement takes an action, but mostly I've played sword fights so you pretty much spend the whole time dancing and maybe dodging.
Rosario: Succeeding in a Footwork defence could be interpreted as having stepped back so the blow missed, then coming back in for your next attack.
Dragina Vorota: *nod* OK.
Rosario: In that last fight, the GM could have rules that we each spent an action moving from long range to melee range, but I guess in this case he didn't feel the need.
Rosario: Now, actions...
Rosario: Obviosuly, you can go in the phases you rolled.
Dragina Vorota: *nod*
Rosario: You can also "hold" an action, say yo don't want to go first so you hold that thee and you can use it on a later phase...
Rosario: LIke you could save it for 9 so you can actively defend from me then.
Rosario: You can actively defend in the phase you're in...
Rosario: Like if I hit you in 4, since you have an action in 4 you can use it for an Active Defence.
Dragina Vorota: So in phase 4, I can actively defend, even if I went on 3?
Rosario: Yes, because 4 is one of your actions.
Rosario: OTOH, if you hit me in 3 and I want to activley defend, I have to "Interupt"
Dragina Vorota: How's that work?
Rosario: An Interupt action is going early, which costs 2 action dice.
Rosario: So, if I choose to activley defend against you in 3, I have to use both my actions for the round.
Dragina Vorota: I see...
Rosario: So you can go on your action, hold your action for later, or go earlier but that costs you 2 actions instead of 1.
Rosario: OOps, most of those "actions" should have been "phase"
Rosario: Let me try that again
Rosario: You can use 1 action die to go in the phase that die shows, or
Rosario: save the die to use in a later phase (hold the action) or
Rosario: spend 2 actions to go in a phase earlier than the action dice show (like if I want to defend in 3 when my dice show 4 and 9)
Dragina Vorota: I understand it now.
Rosario: I undertand it better, too. Teaching to learn :-)
Rosario: So, girl, phase 1 and 2 pass with nothing happening, and it's now phase 3.
Rosario: *hiss* ;-)
Dragina Vorota: In which the Ussurian lass attempts to deftly skewer the dark Castillan hussy's left arm...
Rosario: Um, I thought this was a fist fight :-) And neither of us has Knife.
Dragina attempting to hit Rosario's left arm, 5k2
Damage RollRolling 5d10.
Results: 5 8 2 1 1 for a total of 17.
Rosario: And no fair pulling a Legolas with the arrows or I draw my swords :-)
Dragina Vorota: Oh! OK, f'get that, then... wouldn't hav eworked anyway...
Dragina Vorota: ... Legolas?
Rosario: Lord of the Rings? Where he stabs an orc with an arrow then knocks it and fires it into another orc :-).
Rosario: 5k2 is what you'd roll to punch me, though.
Dragina Vorota: Ahh... *chuckle*
Rosario: You got a 13, which is under my 15 passive defense using Footwork.
Rosario: So, the Ussuran takes a swing at the Castillian, who sees it coming and deftly doges out of the way.
Dirty fighting... boot to the head, from Dragina 5k2
Damage RollRolling 5d10.
Results: 1 6 2 2 3 for a total of 14.
Dragina Vorota: Oh... argh... I'm confusing myself again.
Rosario: Were you rerolling 3 or starting 4?
Rosario: phase 3 and 4 I meant
Rosario: I hate to have to say this, but Kick is also a seperate Knack :-/
Dragina Vorota: RErolling 3... Oh. Feh. What skill is it under?
Rosario: Dirty Fighting. We can count it as a punch instead of a kick, though. You can try to kick, but it's straight Finesse to attack.
Dragina Vorota: OK... call it a punch, then... total of 9. Not nearly good enough, methinks...
Rosario: The Castillian _really_ saw it coming and doged easily.
Dragina Vorota: *hehs* The Ussurian looks a bit panicked.
Rosario: "Sorcerous heathen!" she spits, throwing a punch at the blond.
Rosario: The crew starts chanting "fight fight fight" in several languages :-)
Rosario's punch, 4k3
Damage RollRolling 4d10.
Results: 1 2 6 4 for a total of 13.
Rosario: (yuck)
Dragina Vorota: Eheh, Dragina gives a rude sign that needs no translation as she slips to the side...
Rosario: The Castillian must have let her temper rule, (as my 12 doens't come near your PD of 20) and misses.
Rosario: "Take your best shot," the swordswoman growls, not that you understand the words...
Dragina Vorota: ... and now, she tries to show who really knows how to fight, by hooking her fingers and giving a good swipe...
Dragina's 'punch'
Damage RollRolling 5d10.
Results: 2 10 1 8 8 for a total of 29.
Rosario: Ow. 18 plus...
Dragina Vorota: Hrm... 10 explodes?
Dragina's exploded 10
Damage RollRolling 1d10.
Results: 6 for a total of 6.
Rosario: never mind, 18 beats my footwork and I don't have an action to active defend.
Dragina Vorota: 24... Ah.
Dragina Vorota: And damage is done how again?
Rosario: Roll damage, 1k1
Dragina Vorota: Ok.
Rosario: A fist is 0k1, add your Brawn.
Dragina's damage, 1k1
Damage RollRolling 1d10.
Results: 7 for a total of 7.
Rosario: So someone with 5 Brawn does 5k1, we do 1k1.
Dragina Vorota: Why only k1, even with massive Brawn?
Rosario's wound check
Damage RollRolling 1d10.
Results: 10 for a total of 10.
And the reroll
Damage RollRolling 1d10.
Results: 6 for a total of 6.
Rosario: 16, so I now have 7 Flesh Wounds. If I'd missed, I'd have dramatic wound but no flesh wounds.
Dragina Vorota: *nod* BTW, what does Toughness do again?
Rosario: It's only a fist. I think some fighting knacks improve the potential damage, but nothing either of us has.
Rosario: Um, I'd have to look, hold on.
Dragina Vorota: OK...
Rosario: Roll an extra Kept die on wound checks.
Rosario: Roland was right, you _should_ have the rabbit Knack.
Rosario: With Toughness and your Resolve, you keep going and going and going ;-)
Rosario: The Castillian, realizing she's at least a little outmatched, picks up a nearby, um...
Rosario: belaying pin :-)
Dragina Vorota: should have the rabbit Knack?
Rosario: (Didn't want to use anything sharp...)
Rosario: The joke is that Dragina's like the Energizer Bunny ;-)
Dragina Vorota: Heh... and my toughness and resolve are the only things that keep me going in a fight... 'till I can get sufficient ability as a pyeryem.
Rosario: OOC: I'm using my Attack (Improvized Weapon) for color. I have the same in both attack knacks, and hand-held-sized things tdo the same damage as fists.
Rosario: Phase 9...
Belay that! 4k3
Damage RollRolling 4d10.
Results: 10 8 5 3 for a total of 26.
Rosario: 23 beats your footwork defense so I don't need to let the 10 explode.
1k1 damage
Damage RollRolling 1d10.
Results: 9 for a total of 9.
Dragina Vorota: Ouch, yeah. BTW, what wo uld happen if Dragina were to try swinging some small blunt object... or even small sharp object?
Dragina Vorota: Ok... and I roll 2k1?
Rosario: So now you roll 2k2 for the wound check (since we take that Toughnes die into account again)
Dragina Vorota: *blink* k2?
Rosario: Extra Kept die.
Dragina Vorota: Oh! I misread, thought it was unkept... whee!
Rosario: Normally you roll Brawn, but your Toughness gives you an extra kept die
Dragina's wound check 2k2
Damage RollRolling 2d10.
Results: 8 8 for a total of 16.
Dragina Vorota: Erp, how much damage was that again?
Rosario: So the Ussran shruggs off the 9 Flesh Wounds (which you still have), and this round is over.
Dragina Vorota: OK... which means roll Panache again?
Rosario: You have 9 flesh wounds, I have 7.
Rosario: yep.
Rosario's initiative
Damage RollRolling 2d10.
Results: 3 2 for a total of 5.
Dragina's init/panache, 2
Damage RollRolling 2d10.
Results: 8 6 for a total of 14.
Rosario: he he he
Dragina Vorota: *starts 'dancing'!*
Rosario: To the chant of "fight fight fight", the Castillian lunges again with the belaying pin...
4k3
Damage RollRolling 4d10.
Results: 6 9 2 5 for a total of 22.
Rosario: 20, hold on a sec...
Rosario: Had to check on the tie, since I hit your TN of 20 exactly.
Rosario: "If you roll equal to or higher than you opponents TN to be hit (i.e your passive defense), you are going to hit him..."
Rosario: So, do you want to use both your actions to active defend, or suck it up?
Dragina Vorota: Suck it up.
damage roll, 1k1
Damage RollRolling 1d10.
Results: 2 for a total of 2.
Rosario: Pheh. You're rolling 2 dice, you _can't_ miss a 2.
Rosario: No wait...
Rosario: 2 plus the 9 from earlier (forgot about that)
Rosario: You need to make a wound check against a TN of 11.
Rosario: on 2k2
Dragina's wound check
Damage RollRolling 2d10.
Results: 6 2 for a total of 8.
Dragina Vorota: Missed... heh. What happens now?
Rosario: You missed, so now your 11 Flesh Wounds become 1 Dramatic Wound.
Rosario: And since you have resolve of 4, it means you're starting to feel it. Just.
Rosario: :-)
Rosario: That was phase 2, right?
Dragina Vorota: Heh. Yeah. So at 2 DW, Dragina's dice no longer explode... and at 4 DW, something else happens... and at 8, she's out?
Rosario: "You're tougher than you look, witch."
Rosario: I was wrong, at 4 they no longer explode, at 8 you're our.
Rosario: /out
Dragina Vorota: Dragina staggers, hate all but making her eyes glow as she growls something unintelligable...
Dragina Vorota: Whoa. Dragina is one /tough/ lady.
Rosario: The swordswoman looks like she's going for another shot, then reconsiders and waits for the Ussuran to make her move.
Rosario: OOC: I'm holding that action in case I want to active defend ;-)
Rosario: You have twice my Resolve, yes, you're tough :-)
Rosario: I'm "crippled" (i.e. dice don't explode) at 2 and out at 4.
Rosario: So now it's phase 6.
Rosario: You're turn :-)
Rosario: BTW, by now you should have noticed the pin the Castillian wears. It shows her to be a member of the Swordsman's Guild. If she drew those blades she could probably cut you to ribbons, but she's showing her honor by not bringing a sword to a fist-fight.
Dragina Vorota: ... or she's really that ticked off. (now has 3 egg-salad sandwiches)
Dragina Vorota: OK. Before I do something... I missed what happens if Dragina attempts to use a simple improvised weapon.
Rosario: Since you don't have Attack (Improvised Weapon), your attack roll becomes straight Finesse, 2k2 IIRC.
Rosario: I have Attack (IW) the same as my Attack (Dirty Fighting), so using the belaying pin makes no game mechanic difference for me. It just looks cool :-)
Dragina Vorota: Ah, OK. So, the cheesed Dragina attempts to slug the other again...
Dragina's punch 5k2
Damage RollRolling 5d10.
Results: 2 2 9 6 1 for a total of 20.
Dragina Vorota: 15...
Rosario: Ow, just got me. unless...
Rosario: Naw, I'm not going to try the active defense. 4k2, odd's are I'd miss anyway. So I'm not using my held action and it looks like you got me. Roll damage.
Dragina Vorota: Ok...
Dragina's damage 1k1
Damage RollRolling 1d10.
Results: 5 for a total of 5.
Dragina Vorota: So you have to beat 12 now?
Rosario: 5 more FWs giving me a total of 12...
wound check
Damage RollRolling 1d10.
Results: 10 for a total of 10.
Dragina Vorota: "Take that, you.. man-stealer!"
and it explodes...
Damage RollRolling 1d10.
Results: 2 for a total of 2.
Rosario: 12. I made the TN so I stil have 12 FWs instead of a DW :-)
Dragina Vorota: Heh...
Rosario: Rosario reels, but recovers quickly. Phase 8...
Dragina Vorota winds up for the blow, focused entirely on the one before
her, snarling under her breath like a beast...
Dragina's punch, 5k2
Damage RollRolling 5d10.
Results: 8 5 2 1 2 for a total of 18.
Rosario: "Ussuran animal" Rosario mutters.
Rosario: 13.
Rosario: ...and dodges the blow.
Dragina Vorota: "Stand still, and fight like a /real/ woman!"
Rosario: She grins, and raises the belating pin to strike (I still have that action from phase 3 :-)
Rosario's attack, 4k3
Damage RollRolling 4d10.
Results: 7 7 3 2 for a total of 19.
Rosario: 17, OK, just to show how it works, I'm going to spend a mock-drama die for our mock combat :-)
Dragina Vorota: Sure.
adding 1k1 to that attack
Damage RollRolling 1d10.
Results: 2 for a total of 2.
Rosario: 19. Damn, missed.
Dragina Vorota: .. but 'twas a dramatic miss!
Rosario: Oh, SO close!
Rosario: And thus ends round 2.
Rosario: Think you're getting the hang of it?
Dragina Vorota: I'm getting there. =>
Rosario: Want to go another round. I don't think the bosun's mate's seen us yet... ;-)
Dragina Vorota: *smirk* Sure.
Rosario: Initiative then...
Dragina's init
Damage RollRolling 2d10.
Results: 5 5 for a total of 10.
Rosario's initiative
Damage RollRolling 2d10.
Results: 4 8 for a total of 12.
Dragina Vorota: OK... that's an interesting one...
Rosario: Me, then you twice on 5, then me on 8, assuming no one holds or interupts...
Dragina Vorota: No interrupt for me...
Rosario: I'm holding my 4 until 5.
Rosario: No, wait, I'm not :-)
Rosario: Rosario takes another swing at the Ussruan, dark hair flying.
Rosario: And just to make it interesting, I'm calling a Raise.
Dragina Vorota: To...
Rosario: checking rules...
Dragina Vorota: *nod*
Rosario: I raise the TN to hit you by 5, and if I hit I get to roll an extra unkept die for damage.
Rosario: Not something I'd do in a serious fight, but we're playing here so what the heck :-).
4k3, TN 25 (eep)
Damage RollRolling 4d10.
Results: 9 5 5 4 for a total of 23.
Rosario: 19, would have missed anyway.
Rosario: Phase 5.
Rosario: (Oh this is gonna hurt...)
Dragina Vorota: OK... Dragina tries to deliver a powerful one-two punch to Rosario!
Dragina's punch 5k2
Damage RollRolling 5d10.
Results: 1 6 1 8 5 for a total of 21.
Rosario: And I can't active defend because I only have one action left.
Rosario: 14, missed me :-P
Dragina Vorota: 14... miss, /barely/, no?
Rosario: Barely, yes, the TN is 15.
Dragina's second punch 5k2
Damage RollRolling 5d10.
Results: 2 2 6 3 8 for a total of 21.
Rosario: And barely misses again.
Dragina Vorota: ... and the Castillan no doubt ducks and sways away from the 'mighty' blows...
Rosario: That little Castillian is fast on her feet ;-).
Rosario: Then she takes another shot at the Ussuran...
Phase 8, 4k3
Damage RollRolling 4d10.
Results: 5 1 1 6 for a total of 13.
Rosario: hahaha
Dragina Vorota: Mirror dance. :/
Dragina Vorota: Not a bad way to do combat, I'll say.
Rosario: Did you understand what I did with the called Raise?
Dragina Vorota: Yeah... increasing the difficulty, in exchange for doing another kept die of damage?
Rosario: Yep.
Rosario: You can also call a raise to make a called shot, like you asked about earlier.
Dragina Vorota: Sounds like a good way to take care of thugs quickly...
Rosario: Oh yeah, Brutes take one hit and they're out. No flesh wounds :-)
Rosario: Henchman might take one Dramatic wound to take them out, or go out at the same point Heros become Crippled, GM choice.
Rosario: So I'll go through those Montaigne maries real fast :-)
Rosario: /marines
Dragina Vorota: Heh... whilst Dragina does her best to keep up. Wonder how much damage an arrow deals...
Rosario: 2k2
Dragina Vorota: *nod* I think she should use that first.
Rosario: There's a table on your character sheet.
Dragina Vorota: Oh, on the online version.
Rosario: We should see how much damage your goshawk form can dish out :-)
Rosario: Yes
Dragina Vorota: Hrm, should... been a while since we looked that up.
Rosario: Ew, don't bother. The Goshawk has 0k2 claws, but it's also -2 to Brawn, giving you a Brawn of 0. No point.
Rosario: The owl doesn't have an attack.
Dragina Vorota: Erk. Yah, Goshawk form not for combat.
Rosario: Not until your Brawn is at least 3, then you do 1k1. At Brawn 4, 2k2, at 5, 3k2.
Dragina Vorota: .. .would rather boost REsolve another point, then go after Adept.
Rosario: If you get desperate enough to try drachen, and lucky enough to succeed, you do...
Rosario: Brawn +3 making it 4, so 4k3 bite and 4k2 claws.
Rosario: And your TN to be hit goes up by 10.
Dragina Vorota: Yeeow. Average 15 damage with the bite, 10 with claw...
Dragina Vorota can't wait to hit the point she can part-shift... and suddenly
take on a partial-Drachen form right in someone's face...
Rosario: I'm just looking forward to slicing into those Montaigne chanchos.
Rosario: he said they were Brutes, so all I have to do is connect once on each and bye-bye.
Dragina Vorota: "Off the anchor chain, off the bell, off that guy's helmet... nothing but," Dragina winces, "Err... gut."
Rosario: And I rol 6k3 on Fencing attacks, with a +2 on my good sword.
Rosario: Let's see...
Dragina Vorota: Yike...
Test roll, 6k3 +2
Damage RollRolling 6d10.
Results: 6 6 9 7 4 4 for a total of 36.
Rosario: 24 :-)
Rosario: Soldano specializes in slicing through hords of ords :-).
Dragina Vorota: Good day, mrs. Cusinart...
Dragina Vorota: Soldano?
Rosario: I need to look up what the Whirl knack does...
Rosario: It's her swordsman school, the style she fights.
Dragina Vorota: Ah.
Rosario: "Soldano students fight with flair and color, dispatching whatever hordes of unskilled fighters they may be faced with..."
Dragina Vorota: *grin*
Rosario: Oh, I get an extra Drama Die at the begining of combat, for the duration of the battle
Rosario: *EG*
Dragina Vorota: Dragina's going to just take up whatever appropriate aspect, and wade on in, giving the opposition, and maybe a few allies, the shock of their lives...
Dragina Vorota: *shudder*
Rosario: And no off-hand penatly for fighting left-handed.
Rosario: The only form you have that's any good in combat is drachen...
Rosario: I need to buy up my Whirl Knack. It gives you an extra +2 to attack rolls against Brutes.
Dragina Vorota: .. so far. Considering the way DD work, and that I more or less understand them now, might as well shoot for Adept/Master first.
Rosario: Thing is, I only have 1 in that and 3 in Attack (Fencing).
Dragina Vorota: Erf... I forget again what point I get partial-change, and what the other level does for me...
Rosario: True, but that won't help in this fight against these Montaigne :-)
Rosario: You need 4 ranks in 4 Knacks to get Adept. and 5 in 5 for Master.
Rosario: Adept is where you get the partial change.
Dragina Vorota: *nod*
Rosario: Quick math (may be wrong) sez 62 XP to reach Adept.
Rosario: At an high average of 5 Xp per game...
Rosario: Oh, to finish the "color commentary"...
Dragina Vorota: I got 64... if I were to pick up another Knack... which would be a good idea, for combat-oriented stuff. Bear, perhaps... Gotta do my best to save those DD, or at least use them to earn more!
Rosario: Both women slightly battered, but surprisingly the Castillian not as bad as the Ussuran, they notice the audience, snarl at each other one last time, and head towards different parts of the deck to lick their wounds.
Dragina Vorota: *chuckle*
Rosario: Anyway, Roland's home. Any questions on combat?
Dragina Vorota: Not for now... thank you very much!
