Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2000 11:09:56 -0700 (PDT) On Sat, 12 Aug 2000 10:53:49 -0700 (PDT) Mike Knight Said As CAoL Message # 00008625 While Zia is off sleeping and discussing some hardware and software upgrades, Mike and Tink have slipped off to a room for a slight upgrade of their own. "What are these things?" Tink asked from the bathroom, zipping up the gold bodysuit Mike had given her. As the zipper closed, Tink watched it contract to fit her form. A portion even crawled carefully up her neck, gathering her hair up gently, and over her head. She'd seen Mike's do the same thing, fortunately, or she'd have been rather panicked about this. Once the suit was on, it felt like it wasn't there anymore. She had to look in the mirror to be sure. "It's a modification of technomage technology, which is an offshoot of Shadow technology. After the Gateway Katana and the Borg, I'm not that fond of invasive technology, so this suit is essentially an external monitoring system, no internal components needed. In the case there, you'll find a sort of crown, a pair of gauntlets, a belt and a pair of anklets. Put them all on." She did so, everything was made of something similar to silver with gold circuit patterns traced into the headband. Gold buttons gleamed on the left gauntlet and on the belt's buckle. "Like this?" Tink asked, exiting the bathroom. Mike had donned a medium grey suit, with black anklets, headband, belt and gauntlets. Blue ciruit designs traced his headband, with blue buttons on his left gauntlet and on the buckle. "Exactly like that," he said, then grinned, "You're gonna love this suit. It's an offshoot of the Voyager's EMH's mobile emitter, with replicator abilities, transdimensional pockets, site to site and multidimensional transporter, antigravity belt, and other goodies." Tink's eyes were already gleaming. Mike went on, "It has camoflauge abilities, naturally, can look like any suit of clothes you care to choose, from replicating an exact image of your body up to full environmental spacesuit. I can't think of why you'd need the former, unless you wound up in one of those James Bond realities, but it'll pass for skin to the normal human senses. Also, anything you put on or in a pocket after putting on the suit can be scanned and shifted to a transdimensional pocket or held in place via the typical holofield combination. We'll need to do the latter with the Fuzzy artifacts." Mike thinks for a moment, "Two things to bear in mind, should access to other dimensions be cut off, like we ran into with Jadis's Dimension, you'll lose access to anything that's housed in another dimension. That includes the transporter, even for site to site in the same dimension. So, if you know in advance, you might want to dress accordingly beforehand. "Finally, put in these contacts. They're just the technomage variety. Control is through them, thought, or the controls on your left gauntlet or belt. The computer is simplistic, but userfriendly, at least by 23rd century standards. I think the menu's pretty straightforward. It's also fairly configurable. Oh, there's one last thing I want to show you." Mike paused a moment, then Tink noticed a shimmering blue-white light begin to form around him. Something was being created over his body. When it finished, Tink couldn't help buy giggle. "And you said you didn't like mecha!" she exclaimed. Mike took off the helmet and grinned. "It's power armor, technically. You've got one, too, listed under "Weapons - Armor." Or just think "Activate Power Armor."" Tink did that and found her own form covered in chrome and gold plates with red accent lines designed similarly to Mike's light grey and light blue with black. Both were shaped to fit the respective sex of the wearer and both, to her amusement, had wings, though hers were collapsed into a pack on the back at the moment. She opened them up experimentally. Mike took off his helmet. "Okay, there's more to look at and learn, but I know you're probably already knee-deep in the tech specs, so you already know that." In answer, Tinkerbell lifted gently off the floor and glided about the room. Mike smirked. */Failsafe, now that we're done goofing around.../* Mike sent out, then amended, */Well, one of us, anyway... where is our artifact being held and what's the place like in general?/* ================================= Subject: AAE6(7z): So, What're We Walking Into Here? "I'll watch the smaller activities for >outcomes of actual harm, which seems to be the lady king's matter of >'Annoying the Natives'." Mike considers for a moment. "On second thought, Tink, skip the packing, get dressed in an outfit that you find most comfortable and most normal for you. We've gotten or are close to getting half the items we're after just by asking and explaining our need and maybe doing a favor in return. Walking in ready to steal the item we're after seems extremely presumptuous. Besides, you wanted to be a Time Lady, not a thief, I'd be teaching you the wrong things." Tink shrugs and heads to change, "If you say so, Grumpa. But I don't follow why it should be comfortable and normal." Mike chooses some clothes as he explains, "Essentially, I don't want us to be in any way uncomfortable. If we should encounter some sort of opposition, it sounds as if our best defense will be how accepting and grounded our own self-image is, thus if what we're wearing isn't us, or isn't comfortable, our mental state will be at a disadvantage. Also, the more technical the item we're wearing or using, the more ways there would be to attack it and use it against us, which we'd have to fight. Imagine a spell that turned a phaser into a child's toy phaser. Or imagine if we drew a phaser and enough people assumed it was a toy that it became a toy." "Like the Dreamtime?" Tink asks from the bathroom. "Something like that, without the mutual cooperation and mental gestalt linking us all together into a cohesive unit." Mike replies, "At least if I'm understanding Failsafe correctly. From what little I remember of Roland's reality, it seemed that the idea was not to tip off the normals that something wierd was afoot, that was to everyone's benefit, excepting arguably the normals. Here, sounds like the normals have the ultimate say in what happens in their world because what they expect in their minds to be true tends to happen. And in sheer numbers, normal'd always win. It's gotta make just about any practitioner of wierdness; magic, tech, psychic, whatever; very nervous. You'd be driven underground in fear of something backfiring on you if you did it in public. One on one, my will might outweigh a normal person's, but a whole roomful, I should think I'd be the one beaten down into mundanity. There has to be a bit of leeway, though, otherwise, seems like the naysayer'd keep them back in the pre-stoneage. Imagine someone inventing fire with flint when he's off by himself, but when a whole bunch of doubting Toms show up, he can't even get a spark." Tink emerges from the other room, saying with a giggle, "'Og no understand, it work fine before.'" Mike grins, "That's exactly what I'm concerned about. I have a feeling we'll be better off just pitting will against will rather than actually having any tricks of our own. Excepting the old 'What no one knows about can't hurt us,' idea." The pair of time travellers emerge from their rooms in the hallway to spy Zia arriving. They've changed out of their mecha suits into ordinary clothing, Tink adopting a pink hooded sweatsuit jacket, blue denim bib overalls, a pale yellow t-shirt and socks, pink canvas hightops and her hair back in a simple ponytail held with a yellow band. Mike's adopted blue jeans, black canvas shoes, a white t-shirt, and a brown suede sleeved, black suede letterman jacket. He'd also stepped into the bathroom and given himself a haircut, using the unique properties of the castle to be done almost as soon as he entered. It's now short in back and on the sides and just a bit long on top. Michael smiles at Tinkerbell as he asks, "Comfortable?" Tinkerbell grins, "Yeah, you?" "Yup," Mike says, then smiles to Zia, "Hi, ready to go?" ================================= Subject: Re: AAE6(7z): So, What're We Walking Into Here? She figures out how to bring it up, and starts looking for information on the amusement park. Knowing amusememnt parks, memorizing whatever passes for a map would be a good idea. Once that is done, she'll flip her 'Guide' over to current fashions - not the Paris runway sort, more the New York fancy store clothes, mail order stores (e.g. Penny, Roebuck, etc.) to get an idea what fits in and what doesn't. >And the User Manual for the Vehicle, > Which has the Enhance Line-Walker Drive, > As well as a Faber based version of a Replicator, > A Smart but not Sentient Computer, with > More data storage than I can easily put a number >to... > A Map Display in the Dash, > Etc. Zia will be sure not to accept any renumeration for doing so, at least. Conjury does happen to be one of her slighter skills, but she deals with a specialized area within it, usually. Zia gives the kids a fake-haughty smile (meaning she's putting it on, and makes sure they can tell), "Oho, you want to see some 'tricks', do you? But you know..." She gives them all a serious look as she spreads the cloak back to free her hands. She is wearing a deeper, but still electric-vibrant shade, blue dress underneath it. "Magic is real, not trickery. Now, does anyone here want to see some magic?" As they respond, she: adjusts her bracelets, more seeming to appear each time she does so, until she has a number of slender wire ones dangling and making much tinkling noise passes her staff back and forth between hands while tweaking her cloak about, messing with her belt purse, and such - until she is wearing two elbow-length white gloves that she wasn't wearing before - somehow. "Nothing up my sleeves..." She tries to demonstrate. "Er, no sleeves, either. It sounds...odd, almost echoing, but with an air of AUTHORITY. Not domination, however, just presence. /How true. 'Ain't nothin like the real thing, baby.' By the Source...I haven't heard that one in--anyway./ It probably takes some longer than others to realize the voice is...Roland's? An image of Roland in a vast chamber flickers through the link. Banks of insanely advanced computers, transport pads of varying sizes and types, and clear cylinders holding trophies of a hundred eras are around him, along with heroes of a dozen different realities. Of course, this wouldn't surprise the CAoL. The _really_ odd part is Roland himself. He's wearing what looks like faintly glowing spandex, in the form a golden T-shirt with several symbols (Champions, Justice Legion, T2M, and Star Command, among others) and blue pants, he has a one-piece visor on, and he's got a mustache and a _beard._ Roger recognizes him immediately. (Morgan must've gotten him to grow the beard again; he hadn't had one for some forty years.) /Where _are_ you any--oh!/ He chuckles indulgently. /Perhaps I should have asked _when._ I'd offer to send an astral along, but I see you've got my kid-self there with you./ The 'current' Roland Spocks an eyebrow. /'Kid' self?/ The older Roland laughs. /Son, I'm pushing five hundred. To me, anyone less than a century old is a 'kid.' Not that I say that to their faces, usually, but I forgot that we used to be sensitive to that sort of thing./ He 'looks' back at Roger. /You staying out of trouble, Roger? Wait--never mind. Stupid question./ His smile widens. /Are you avoiding 'Dirty Pair' class trouble?/ ================================= Subject: Re: AAE 6(7z): All Aboard!
