Defender gestures to Orchid, who races to the controls. The large map on the screen zooms in from the overhead view of the conquered territory (with special icons for Washington DC, Philadelphia, and Columbus), to an otherwise nondescript area along the Pennsylvania-Maryland border. It should be a large, mostly boring landscape of farmland and lightly wooded area dotted with small towns. Orchid gasps. Jaguar growls. Defender glares, fists clenched. Darkseid, it would seem, is taking no chances with his stelae "hub." As with most things TORG, Darkseid has taken the basic tools of the High Lord and done something...different with them. In the center of the complex is a Fire Pit. Small by Fire Pit standards, it is still roughly the size of a football stadium. Several buildings surround it, alternating between squat, ugly gray bunkers and spiring, elegant gray towers designed with the Kirby aesthetic. Dog soldiers man reinforced emplacements that dot the landscape, while flying battle-cruisers coast lazily through the air as parademon phalanxes soar around them. Amid this totalitarian nightmare, normal Earth-9 humans are herded along to serve their new masters as Hunger Dogs. There is no sign of any of the world's many native varieties of supernatural being. "...I hope people are going to be ready to move soon," Defender says far too calmly. "We're ready whenever you are, big 'D'," Solitaire says, indicating the other Champions. ================================= Subject: Re: AAE9: A Plan! There's a plan! "Depends, 'whatta'ya want'" chimes in Dhyrclhanc as he once again reaches into a seemingly blank spot in mid-air and his 3/4th of arm disappears. Pulling his arm back out, he withdraws an SMG that looks suspiciously like an FN P-90, albeit with a number of modifications. "This is a 'CLAW-R'; Combat Light Automatic Weapon, Redesigned, although I've dumbed the design down to the point where the weapon, itself, it closest to the native available Tech Level as possible." Grabbing the front of the weapon he indicates the integral cluster of items just above the barrel. "This basic weapon has become what tends to be my default sidearm, when I need one, that is. In your 'sensor cluster', right here, you've got a white-light, flashlight, a green-light laser designator and a x30 standard telescopic/LI sight." Dhyrclhanc then pulls a clip off of the side of the weapon; those familiar with the P-90 will know that the clip in normally inserted in the top. "Two 50 round magazines, holding 5.7 mm rounds, are mounted on either side of the weapon, and the weapon can fire from either with the flip of a switch located above the trigger, the weapon is also designed as to be used either right-handed... " He tosses the weapon to his other hand. "... Or left-handed. Personally, I've got mine loaded with teflon coated SAP rounds and Depleted Necronium DS AP rounds. Necronium is a magically radioactive substance, which is analogous to Uranium -- thus a DN round is essentially the same as a DU round only a DN round effects magickal targets. Neconium is native to an alternate Earth called 'Merlin' where Magic and Technology exist side-by-side and often times intermingling with strange effects, for example; here on Earth-9 the elite status-conscious mundanes all want to drive SUVs, on 'Merlin', they want Flying Carpets, especially the 'DuPont Rug-Ranger' -- an 18 sq. ft. flying carpet that's adapted from a government military surplus design, but I digress. The weapon is exceedingly light, weighing slightly less than 3 kg empty. Obviously, Fuzzy can make whatever ammo you want. Otherwise anything I can fabricate, so can Fuzzy, although my designs tend to be a little more creative and Fuzzy's tend to be more... um... multi-disciplinary, for lack of a better word. Also, I tend to work more while on my feet and Fuzzy plans ahead better than I do." If no one claims an interest in the SMG, Dhyrclhanc will shove it right back through the "invisible hole" and then wait to see if anyone has any requests that might not have already been fulfilled by any of Fuzzy's "toys". ================================= Subject: Re: AAE9: A Plan! Karma picked up her twin amulets from the table. It was at this point that the inevitable happened. One amulet, shielded from the gold kryptonite and containing the red gem to grant Kryptonian powers, came into sufficiently close contact with the other, unshielded gold kryptonite amulet. Gold kryptonite, of course, has the capability to permenantly rob a Kryptonian of his powers. Naturally, as Karma was not a Kryptonian, this was not an issue for her. However, it was an issue for the amulet granting those Kryptonian powers. The gold kryptonite burnt out the red gem immediately, overheating it in its setting. The amulet began to overheat as well, naturally. As this same amulet carried the shielding gems for physical, mental and energy attacks, these also failed in rapid succession. Fortunately, Karma dropped the melting amulet before her ability to handle such a hot object vanished completely. But as for the amulet, it was now nothing more than an inert lump of cooling precious metals. Karma glanced at the other amulet in consternation, removed all its gems, idly wedging them into the cooling gold as she did, then took out the leftover gems, shoved the black one in the center of the remaining amulet, and put it in her pocket, otherwise unadorned. Moonstone, who'd quietly come down to collect her two medallians, took them apart seperately, putting one amulet and stone set away as Karma had (unadorned barring the black shielding gem) in a backpack before adorning the other with one grey stone, the one black already set to shield it from gold kryptonite, one red gem, one turquoise, and three deep blue. She then made the backpack vanish, retook her dragon form, cast a spell to make her own magic amulet appear, hung Fuzzy's next to it. Karma passed her one of the teleporter boxes and Moonstone hung that next to the amulets on the same choker-like purple collar. Karma sighed, pulled out the amulet that still worked, put in two grey gems and one turquoise around the center black gem and put it back in her pocket, opposite the pocket with the other gems. "Right," Karma said finally, "'Guns, lots of guns.' Skip the Necronium, standard ammo will do, thank you, a pair of them would be nice. And a simple, straightforward, unadorned, un-spellified unless it's a really idiot-proof spell scabbard for my sword that I can draw from comfortable that won't get in my way otherwise. There is no sign of >any of the world's many native varieties of supernatural being. Quick!: Anybody got handy *some* kind of expandable shield that can at least *somewhat* protect a few (5-10 at least) normal Earth-9 humans, for at least a short time anyway? A camouflage option would be nice too. Just something that might slow down stray energy bolts would be good. Take chances with material weapons. If not available in a hurry, I'll just have to do without. I see I might be of some use after all. Since most of those "herding" aren't likely to be Krypton-Class fighters, but most likely just the usual cannon-fodder, maybe I can get in and get a few out. The top-dogs on both sides are more likely to be occupied with each other, not strays on either side. Thinking about it: A good camouflage suit would be nice. *Frank hurries off to change into whatever camouflage gear is available and that fits in the Citadel.* They've probably got most of those rounded-up out in the open. Here's hoping they haven't had *too* much time to make really secure holding-pens for them. I'll have to take a closer look at that "map". Even getting a few out to relative "safety" would make it worth the effort. But I have a little bit bigger plans .... Distractions can be ... Distracting. There's a reason POWs were encouraged to escape during wartime. BTW: Hunger Dogs? I'm not sure I like the sound of that .... Oh yeah: "Fuzzy? Does this 'gun' have a 'stun' setting, or is it only energy levels? I can use it either way; but it would be nice not having to worry about who I shoot. 'Stun' meaning for regular mortals, of course. If not, I can work around it. I know such things as stunning a person without killing him are *much* harder to engineer into a weapon than most people think. OTOH, I also assume the Shops would have good reason to do such engineering, if it's reasonable to do so." > "...I hope people are going to be ready to move soon," Defender >says far too calmly. > >"We're ready whenever you are, big 'D'," Solitaire says, indicating >the other Champions. Not exactly a "champion"; but I'll do what I can to cause trouble while trying not to get killed. *Frank stops to change a green jewel for a yellow one in his amulet.* Hate to do that; but I'm going to need a bit extra; and tiring out just doesn't seem to be one of the options. And ... If this works out right, nobody is going to be aiming *mental* weapons *my* way (others, yes); while I'm going to NEED my empathy, for once. There's always a risk .... Oh yeah .... *Frank asks directions to the local electronics-lab ... It seems he wants a few dozen ordinary electrical jumpers with alligator-clips ... each about three feet long. If not that many available, he assumes one of the duplicators around will make some.* For "ordinary foes" more ordinary precuations. Sometimes blasting into a compound and fighting (and killing) the bad guys there in a blaze of glory isn't the best option. At least at first, anyway. *Frank remembers all too well the term, "collateral damage".* Oh yeah ... On the way over there, can somebody drop me off in one of the closer hills to where they're holding prisoners? About three to ten miles would be nice, If you can get me there without being *too* obvious. I assume most of the attention will be on the real champions. Or better yet, if not already underway, drop me off a bit early ... as soon as I collect those jumpers. ================================= Subject: Re: AAE9: A Plan! There's a plan! I'm not sure I'd want to chance a holo-deck with a real weapon. Yeah ... I know ... The simulations are about as real as you can get. Still, somebody would have to program in a Weapons' Shop Gun's characteristics; and that would probably take more time than I have to practice. Callahan, OTOH, HAS to have the Danger Room take things I can't even imagine. People in his line of work usually know what sort of thing to expect BEFORE it's needed. Usually. I just need to get used to the thing. I had hoped for a week or so; but will make do with an hour or two. It ain't exactly going to be like leading your target and allowing for bullet-drop with an air-rifle. Still have to compensate for body-reactions and (over enough distance) energy-beams to penetrate. I suspect not *quite* like computer simulations of targets, where the shot is instantaneous. ;-} ================================= Subject: Re: AAE9: A Plan! There's a plan! Um ... That wasn't the idea; though I'd take one. Might come in handy. Just wanted something to provide basic coverage against side-effects of a lot of large energy weapons going off nearby. Bare skin and "normal" clothing just doesn't do much against the wild shot of a laser or even flash from a nuke or nearby splash from some of the weapons those cruisers have. Something that would protect a civilian from a stray laser shot or flash from a big weapon going off nearby? Something like one of those amulets, only just against energy weapons of low-caliber. A rock-sized thing that could be carried in a pocket would be ideal. If not ... *Frank Shrugs* Like I said, if not, then we'll do without. I was thinking that somewhere in the multiverse, such personal or expandable shields might be common. No time to invent anything right now. "Going into harm's way." Sounds perfect. I hadn't thought of taking a replicator. Easier than carrying around a sack of items. I presume I'll have to feed it matter to replace what it makes. Most duplicators seem to work that way. Some are a bit more picky than others about *what* matter they take. Ordinarly black dirt or clay seems to work fairly well for most though. A few seem to run off available air; though they're usually a bit slower to recharge ... just to get enough mass. I suppose I *should* RFM. ;-} But is that really macho? *Frank, defying male images of how "manly" it is to read the instructions, pages through the abbreviated "manual" built into the back of the duplicator. It doesn't take more than five minutes.* Nice ... Can't get lost in the wash. >>Like I said, if not, then we'll do without. >>I was thinking that somewhere in the multiverse, such personal or >>expandable shields might be common. No time to invent anything right >>now. "Going into harm's way." > >"Ohh sure, but > I don't normally Carry such things with me..." Gee ... I wonder why not. ;-} As if they'd be much use to you. Well ... Until things take off, I'll either be snoozing, eating, or practicing with the new weapon and enhanced strengths over in Callahan's Danger Room. Ignore any earthshaking thuds, screams, or wild sizzling of the door. It's just practice ... Honest. Has not a thing to do with not having real work lately. *Now WHY is everybody looking at me like that, and raising their eyebrows?* Lessee now: Pack ... Check. Jumpers ... Check. Camo . uh . OK, I guess. Cutters ... No, scratch those. Talisman .. Check. WS gun .... Check. Rations ... Check. F & D duplicator ... Check (Food and Drink). Shield dup Check. Boots ... Check. Helmet ... No, scratch that. First Aid . Check. Salt ... Check. Tool Kit .. Check. Plastic Ex Check. Caps ... Check. Bomb-proof Check. (container for caps) Knives . 6 Check. Boot Kit . Check. D-Saw ... Check. Spare Glass Check. Telescope ... No, the Weapon will do. Waterproof Check. Hat ... Check. Hmmm ... Not bad. Duplicators are *so* nice. Less than 20 pounds in the pack. Rest distributed in, on, and throughout clothing. The pack makes a barely noticeable lump in the back. Now to practice WEARING all this, and using super-strength without tripping over my own feet or dropping something important like the weapon. *There's a muffled "THUD!" as the Danger Room door closes; something like the sound a bank-vault door would make if slammed by a giant.* Oops. Obviously this *is* going to take some practice. For the next half hour the occupants of The Place occasionally feel the floor quake minutely, and once even the door bulges ominously for a second. But Somehow Mike must have reinforced the Room considerably over it's "more normal" restraints. A few snickers run around the room though, when a series of vibrations shakes even The Place like a car going over a washboard road. Several speculations as to exactly HOW that took place are wagered. Somehow, even through the damping, a few words sneak through the walls ... Words about "Damned if you do, and damned if you don't," being thee more audible. A final exclamation of, "Assholes," and then (relative) silence. Obviously Frank has been taking his mad out on something during his practice. The door opens, and Frank comes through the door ... The ground behind him faintly steaming. Yes ground. The interior looks more like an army training field than a room off a neighborhood bar. Perhaps it is, for now. "Bless me Mike, for I have thirst," he says. Mike just raises an eyebrow at the bound that takes the normally unobtrusive man almost halfway across the room; but doesn't say a word; just handing him a tall crystal mug of ... Lemonade? "Thanks, Mike." A Looong swallow, and the drink is gone; to have the glass fly clear across the room and smash dead-center into the fireplace. **** CRASH **** "To those who take responsibility for their own jobs." No more explanation is given. Frank looks over at the "Free Lunch"(tm), shakes his head, and then pulls some kind of "ration" out of his pack and starts to gnaw on it. DAMN. He reaches *back* into the pack, pulls out a tangled mess of wires, a cracked medallion, a bent talisman, and several other items all mashed together in a sticky mess of squashed water-bottle, rations, and other items all bent out of shape. Obviously, being super-powered has other side-effects he hadn't planned on. Well, hopefully they can all be replaced before it drops in the pot. Next time though, food, water, and duplicator are going in a SEPARATE compartment from more unsquishy items. Also, the wires are going separate too ... Once he gets them sorted out again. Time ... Damn. Time he *had* planned on sleeping. Still, this CAN be considered part of planning and practice. At least the weapon seems completely unchanged and unaffected by it's trips through the mud and dirt. Frank ducks back through an X-window to the Citadel. Things to do, preparations to make, things to be fixed or replaced. Nothing ever works out the way it was planned; and no plan ever survives contact with the enemy. Still, the old Boy Scout Motto applies. *No, I will NOT take along a sleeping bag!* Too damned big and awkward to carry. Oops. DAMN ... Almost forgot my Field Survival Knife. AND the old "Commando Kit". Geesh. Idiot. Until and unless it's time to drop in the pot, I'll probably be snoozing over in the corner. A good Marine never forgets to grab winks whenever possible. I'm ready to go as I'll ever be. Somebody drop me off on the way ... "I don't know if I qualify as plan B," Rio says as she comes though an X-window from the Place, "but I finally made it. Sorry I couldn't come sooner, Bay City was under attack, too. The nasties actually tried to take out the chantry! They might have overrun us, too, if not..." The Ecstatic stops, and her eyes meet Roland's. Roland forces back a rising tide of emotion, simply nodding to the Ecstatic. He gestures at his new 'look.' /"A final gift,"/ he explains. Rio nods, relived that Roland already knew. "He said to tell them he did his duty," she says softly. "I don't know what we would have done if he hadn't...come along when he did. Logan and Ulf and I'd gotten in over our heads," she adds, a bit sheepishly. Roland considers this; apparently, he recognizes the wording, but doesn't entirely understand it. He takes a long deep breath and closes his eyes briefly. When he opens them, rock-solid Defender is looking out of them. "Good to have you aboard." He looks around, not quite managing a smile. "Literally." Eric registers Rio's arrival, but says nothing in response; it may be good to see her, but all things considered, her 'report' to the boy scout -- [to Defender,] he corrects himself -- takes precedence. >> "I've got your Six," Eric says, all business, his voice once >>again more solid than steel. > >"Thank you, love." Then she picks up a resonance that's unmistakable to one of her trad. If Zia's here then differences must have been worked out, and if she's making Eric look like _that_ then Rio decides to drop old "first impressions" and start from scratch. "Hi, bro, long time no see," she smiles at her brother. Eric clears his throat. "Rio," he says mostly neutrally (but still a lot more warmly than he used to be 8^). Rio's smile warms a notch as Eric uses her chosen "handle" instead of his usual use of her given name. Then she looks at the assembled heroes. "So, what's the plan? Or are we on the Indiana Jones plan again?" "There is a plan, of sorts -- Solitaire and Silver Phoenix are going to try and heal Suli's Mind and Primal pattern while the rest of us lay down cover fire. Except for a couple of one-on-ones, it's stick and move, keep them off-balance." With a glance at Orchid, he adds, "Unless you want to be part of the 'landing party,' I'd like you to stay here and help Orchid man the Island's systems." Eric winced, then tensed, expecting that suggestion to go over like the proverbial lead balloon. To his surprise, the Ecstatic nods. "Suits me. I've seen enough combat the past few hours to last me for a _while_." At Roland's nod, she walks over to Orchid to introduce herself and start coordinating, with smiles and nods to various acquaintances on the way. Eric stops, takes off his shades, stares, then puts them back on. "You don't happen to know a couple of fellows names of 'Gawne' and 'Admire', do you?" "Anyway, you were inquiring about a 'Camo Suit'?" Dhyrclhanc tosses him a small package, wrapped in what looks like plastic, or saran-wrap, about the size of a contemporary (GURPS TL 7) computer modem. When and if he unfolds it, he'll find a man-sized, full-body suit, composed of an iridescent black-silver material, and includes a hood. It also looks like it'd be skin tight on him, if he decides to put it on. At the waist is a small, attached, box with a number of dials and switches on it. Along with the suit, the package also includes a military style, sensor visor, including a three-strap head-band that would allow him to look through it without having to hold it up to his face with his hands. "The suit is what's called an Intruder suit and it is based on technology that would be prevalent if we were currently in a star-faring society. I also added a few bells an whistles that I thought might be appropriate." "Specifically, the suit is capable of rendering the wearer effectively invisible to visible light- and IR-based detection. Plus the suit is reflexive, so it'll provide additional protection to any attacks by stiffening to prevent the blow to affect the wearer inside the suit. The material also deflects and unfocuses focused energy attacks so all damage from all energy distance attacks are immediately halved before they can do any damage to the suit or to you. The torso also has integral ceramic inserts that will increase the suit's protection against attacks to your midsection. When powered up the suit has the equivalent material tensile strength of a diamond and it protects 125% that against energy weapons. The suit has enough power to last for 120 hours and can repair itself, if damaged, closing any rip or tear the size of a man's palm within seconds; larger damage will take progressively longer to repair. The repair nanites run off of the wearer's body heat so they don't add any appreciative drain on the suit's power supply. Unfortunately, with all of these features, the suit, itself ends up weighing a total of 12 lbs, by itself." "The visor, on the other hand, weighs about 2 lbs.and, while it doesn't increase your range of sight, but within your normal line-of-sight range, thanks to it's integral micro-computer, it will detect any and all EM radiation (including radio communications), identifies type and composition of all conventional mineral, metallic and chemical materials within range, and detects and also detects and identifies any and all bio-signs of all conventional living creatures (by type or species, but not by individual). The visor also includes a short-range (15 mile), audio communicator. The visor will also be rendered invisible along with the suit, as many of the same stealth technology is cloned in the visor." "We", he says, indicating Fuzzy and himself, "Also do have personal force screens that we can hand out to anyone who might want one, but it looks like you might already know that. I don't if you'd be more comfortable with that kind of thing instead." "In any case, while I cannot speak for My Lord Fuzzy, _I_ commonly have the discretionary recourses of that of a large, first-world nation that I can make available to the CAoL, although I do not always made this fact apparent." He smiles. "Any questions?" }B=8D ================================= Subject: Re: AAE9: A Plan! There's a plan! On Fri, 21 Nov 2003 01:05:51 -0600 Martin and/or Dhyrclhanc Said As CAoL Message # 00011534 Dhyrclhanc watched Fuzzy, his former teacher, seemingly playing Santa and handing out the goodies, with much enjoyment. Then a look appeared on his face that gave him the appearance of someone who just remembered something important. He reached into the inside of his long-cloak and withdrew a device that looked like the old Godzilla-Call from the old 1970's Saturday Morning Cartoon, and attached it to the belt of the baldric he wore over-top the Black-Watch-style kilt and shawl he wore. [I had forgotten that I had that Reality Stabilizer with me] He switched on the device and was rewarded by a red-light on the upper-surface flashing on and then staying on. Fuzzy? Remind me how these things are supposed to work again? You handed them out a long time ago. They obviously aren't the devices listed on pg. 81 of the 2nd ed. revised "GURPS: Ultra-Tech" book. He then reached back into his long-cloak again and brought out another, similar looking device and clipped it to the other side of the baldric and switched _it_ on. He momentarily is surrounded by a translucent, blue/gold tinted sphere of energy, which disappeared when he shut the second device off. [Going up against Dhyrclhanc, this personal screen won't hurt] Then the close to 427-year-old, super-annuated, adolescent hatchling, Lensdragon quickly opened and shut his long-cloak as he called out, "Quothe, Nevermore, Nevermore, Nevermore." The sound of birds' wings flapping, as if from far away, came out of the cloak, soon to be followed by two, flying, silver-black ravens. The ravens flew around the War Room/Auditorium once, landed on the large oval table once, seemingly pleased at the large audience in attendance, and then they both took off again and then landed, each one was now perched on one of Dhyrclhanc's shoulders. "... And now, last but not least." Dhyrclhanc quipped, as if suddenly aware that he had begun to gather an audience, and he reached, for a final time, into his long-cloak, and brought out the rail-road lantern-shaped Power Battery that was the match for his magickal green-lantern ring. He touched his hand, on which he was wearing the Green Lantern Ring to the Battery, and said, aloud... "... And I Shall Shed My Light Over The Dark, Evil, Places, For The Dark, Evil, Things Cannot Stand The Light; The Light of The Green Lantern!" Then he turned his attention to everyone gathered around him. "What...?" ================================= Subject: Re: AAE9: A Plan! There's a plan!
