The Iraq Coalition Casualty Count changed their categories, so I had to make a few changes to mine. The main change seems to be to count accidents caused by hostile fire as hostile, rather than just accidents. My calendar has been updated to show those accidents as hostile deaths as well.

Other changes I noticed: The two homicides are now listed as "hostile"; three of the nine "friendly fire" deaths are accounted under "hostile," and I can’t account for the other six; the three possible suicides are counted under other categories.

At least we’re being welcomed with flowers somewhere

Ethnic Albanians greet former president as their liberator

PRISTINA, Serbia and Montenegro, Sept. 19 — Basking in public adoration the United States can only dream of in Iraq, ex-president Bill Clinton got a hero’s welcome in Kosovo on Friday, four years after NATO bombing ended Serb rule.

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Admit It On National Television

I know, Tom Tomorrow, Daily Kos, (link dead) Atrios (and here), The Left Coaster (who seems to have originated this round), and last but not least Roland’s Justice Log have already covered it, but (in my not-so-humble-opinion) it bears repeating :-).

Never Forget

[9-11-01 Never Forget]
Never forget the people who died two years ago today, the innocents on the airplanes and on the ground. The emergency response personnel who went into harm’s way to help others. The passengers on Flight 93 who brought the plane down before it could take out another building.

Never forget the malfeasance of those in power, who by all accounts knew, and did nothing. At the very least, they need to explain the discrepancies, the lies we’ve been told during the past two years. The facts are still trickling out. What new facts remain to be brought to light, and how horrific will they be?

And never forget how those in power have used the tragic events of 9/11/01 to their political advantage, dishonoring the lives lost in pursuit of goals they set down long before the hijackers set foot on those planes.

Clothes? What clothes?

These things have been pointed out before, but IMNSHO they bear repeating.

Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Jeb Bush and Lewis Libby (Cheney’s chief of staff) wrote, in Rebuilding America’s Defences, September 2000:

"…while the unresolved conflict with Iraq provides the immediate justification, the need for a substantial American force presence in the Gulf transcends the issue of the regime of Saddam Hussein."

Facts and Opinions

Since this blog is titled "Reality Check," it doesn’t feel like an appropriate place for me to be posting opinion pieces. However, my husband’s blog is intended for just such posts. So he’s letting me use that space when I have something opinionated to say.

So, if you’re interested you can check out my article "Of Sheep and Wolves" on Roland’s Justice Log.

[ed. note: I’ve also posted it here in Relics.]

The next election…

There was a lot of stuff over the long weekend, so I wasn’t sure what to blog about today. I started one on the sad state that emergency medical care is coming to, but then I saw this one. This is a subject that’s had us worried in varying degrees since Nov. 2000.

Voting machine controversy, 08/28/03

The head of a company vying to sell voting machines in Ohio told Republicans in a recent fund-raising letter that he is "committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president next year."
