Jennifer "Slider" Landers

Team Tomorrow exists to defend human rights, to improve living conditions throughout the world, to protect those who cannot protect themselves, to serve the global community, to foster peace among nations and to implement Project Utopia's goals of a brighter future for all of humankind.

On September 18, 2000, a brave and talented young woman named Jennifer Landers literally appeared at the door of the New York City Rashoud facility. She had amazing power over the nature of three-dimensional space, including teleportation and telekinesis, and declared a desire to use her powers to help others. The attendants were impressed by her, and convinced that she would make an excellent addition to Project Utopia, but felt that she had an ulterior motive. No one could be that innately good and noble, they felt; Ms. Landers was simply too good to be true.

They were wrong.

For almost eight years, "Slider" would prove time and again her courage, dedication, patience, and caring in a world grown tired and cynical. She made the lives of everyone around her brighter, whether it was the mighty Caestus Pax faced with a mountain of paperwork or a tired child frightened by hunger and destruction. Wherever she went, she made the world a better place. If anyone in Team Tomorrow, or any nova at all for that matter, deserved the love and adoration heaped upon them, it was Jennifer.

On May 14, 2008, Jennifer was found in an apartment in Calcutta, her back shattered in a clearly murderous assault. She was declared dead on arrival at the Franklin Moran field hospital.

Even the most vocal anti-Utopians admit that Slider's loss is a tragedy. Her death leaves the world a darker place. There wasn't a person in Project Utopia who didn't mourn her. She will be missed. She will be avenged. She will never be forgotten.

To date, the prime suspect in the case is Andre Corbin, though even in this the infamous nova is the center of controver>

Andre Corbin is innocent. You are being lied to.

Most people in Utopia don't know it, but the Project has been hijacked from within. So a few of us have taken the admittedly extreme measure of hijacking a portion of this netpage.

There have been a lot of conspiracy theories surrounding Jen's death. Most of them are ludicrous. A few of them are true.

A shadow organization, which is either named Proteus or employs a nova operating by that name, uses Utopia's resources to fulfill their own agenda. Whether taking the road to hell or just greedy and power-hungry, this group is doing things that true Utopians would never do. They manipulate, brainwash and kill in the name of a better world...or at least a better world for them. Worse, some novas captured by them, or even sometimes by Team Tomorrow, never make it to Bahrain, but are "diverted" to Mengelesque facilities for... experiments researching the nature of the M-R node. If the victim is lucky, they're lobotomized in the process. Some have spent their entire captivity screaming.

Some might say that only "bad" novas are targeted by this Proteus, but they will do anything to protect their secrecy. Even kill — or worse — one of the bravest, kindest women ever to walk the Earth. So what are they protecting?

1: They don't want novas to breed. The supposed additive in Mox and Adrenocilin is a myth — it's a genetically engineered virus they released in '99, that turns a nova's hyper-enhanced immune system on his, her or its reproductive systems. Don't worry, it doesn't affect baselines — yet. Let's hope it doesn't mutate, eh?

2: They want to control your views. Of course Project Utopia has a public relations division — it's too big not to have one. But Proteus takes it one step farther. They use their connections to learn about stories they don't want published, or ones they want to control the "spin" on, and work their will through money, sabotage, and in the most extreme and frightening examples, telepathic brainwashing.

3: They want to get rid of the competition. The Teragen aren't very nice people, but they take a surprising amount of flack for a group their size, don't they? And unless you count the Nullifiers (and even Orzaiz disowns those nutjobs), the actual number of Teragen attacks can be counted on both hands. China, of course, is more of a threat to "Proteus;" when was the last time anyone mentioned the vast number of novas that must be from the Middle Kingdom? Over a thousand, right? Wrong. Try under five hundred. And a lot of those don't work for the Chinese government, either. Some of them run into Utopia and vanish from the radar completely. Wouldn't the Project crow over every defection? Haven't they done just that with the sixty-plus Chinese novas who have joined the Project? Look it up. And forget about the Directive. They lost the battle as soon as they became known to the public. They had an early advantage, but they're almost universally hated — admittedly, it's a deserved reputation — and they've got so many holes in security it's amazing that the whole thing hasn't gone under. Think I'm paranoid? Do the research. Even Utopia's resources can't cover tracks like these completely.

This Proteus, or the employers of the nova of that name, are the greatest threat to freedom in the world today. They are counting on you being sheep, not caring, as long as you get a safe, happy, peaceful world. Safe, that is, until you say the wrong thing.

Prove them wrong.

The logical conclusion of their campaign is totalitarianism, and the scariest thing about it is that if they succeed, no one will know they're in danger until it's too late. Slider was targeted because she found out about them. She managed to warn a few of us, but Jen was a hero, not a spy, and they caught her. But they can't kill everyone. If enough people turn enough attention to them, they'll fail, because shadows can't hide in the light. If Slider is dead, we can't let her sacrifice be in vain, and if she is alive (as some of us suspect — a broken back doesn't cause genetic damage!) we must do everything we can to save her.

They're taking your heroes and your world. Take them back.

Farewell, Jennifer, We will never forget you.
