With the Hoover blanket (variation #2), I’ve added another new technique to my crafty arsenal: double knitting! The double thickness should be nice and warm (it certainly felt warm sitting on my lap as I worked on it), and not be as breezy as regular knitting. This was (as far as I remember, adding this note when I moved the post off Livejournal in 2013) my last Project Linus blanket. The logistics of getting blankets to them got to be more of a hassle than it was worth, and I found another group to donate to (more on that later).
Yarn: Caron’s “One Pound”, Main Color “sky blue 508”, Contrast Color “iris 550” (which isn’t on the linked page). It took less than one skein of each (neither was new, though the blue hadn’t had much used, and both had some left over).
Circular needle size 7 (I remembered to write it down this time!)
Gauge: 3 sts = 1″, 5 rows = 1″ in DK; 15 sts = 4″, 7 rows = 1″ in garter stitch
Finished size: 33″x33″
Modifications to pattern linked above:
Cast on 112 sts. Using knitting-on (learned for the Link Gauntlets) gave a nicer edge than the old standard long-tail I’ve used for years :-). The garter st borders on the sides are 11 sts wide, and I knitted an extra two rows of garter for every five rows of DK to keep it even. Also, I twisted the CC around the MC when knitting these extra rows to prevent gaps. For the DK, I used the “more elegant way” mentioned, knitting in MC and purling in CC, which was a great way to get the hang of DK — your goofs show up easier than working both sides in the same color :-).
I didn’t work the suggested sc border, but I may yet add it, especially since the blanket turned out a bit smaller than I’d intended (it was supposed to be 36″ square).
