This is a variation on my basic baby cap.
Rnd 1: Ch 4; work 11 dc in 4th ch from hook; join with a sl st to top of beg ch: counts as 12 dc. (I use the magic ring technique instead.)
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc, now and throughout), dc in joining chain; 2 dc in each dc around, join: 24 dc.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in next dc; *ch 1, skip 1 dc, 2 dc in next dc; rep from * around, ch 1, join: 24 dc and 12 spaces.
Rnd 4: Ch 4, 2 dc in next space; *ch 2, 2 dc in next space; rep from * around, dc in lat space, join to 3rd chain of starting ch4: 24 dc and 12 spaces.
Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in first space; *ch 2, 2 dc in next space; rep from * around, ch 2, join: 24 dc and 12 spaces.
Rnds 6 through 8: repeat rows 4, 5 and 4.
Rnd 9: Ch 3, 2 dc in each space and dc in each dc around; join: 48 dc.
Rnd 10: Ch 4, *skip 1 dc, dc in next dc, ch 1; rep from * around, join to 3rd ch of ch4: 24 dc and 24 spaces.
Rnd 11: Ch 3, work 1 dc in each dc and chain around, join: 48 sts.
Rnd 12: Ch 1, *skip 1 st, 5dc in next st, skip 1, 1 sc in next st, rep from * around, skip 1 st, 5dc in next st, skip 1, join (12 shells), finish off. Weave in all ends.
