A very “Batmanesque” character from the Bryne/Stern “Marvel:The Lost Generation”.
Blackfox had a very long and varied career as a superhero/adventurer. He started out as a wise-cracking swashbuckler type but after helplessly watching his fiancée be brutally killed, Blackfox became much more grim in his approach to fighting evil.
He was a member of “The First Line” and worked with them off and on over the length of his career. He has connections to many of the “Pre-FF” superhero community.

|History: from the Unofficial Handbook of the Marvel Universe (archive)
Not much has been revealed regarding the history and origin of Bob Paine. During World War II, Paine was a successful American secret agent. After the war, he created his heroic identity of the Black Fox and embarked on a career as a crimefighter. In the 1950’s, he met the hero Yankee Clipper, and the two would often work on missions together.
At one point, Paine refused to become a member of the Yankee Clipper’s hero team, the First Line, declaring he would retire, proposing to his girlfriend, Miriam. The details remain unclear, but at some point Miriam was killed by the villain Nocturne, whom Paine fought and killed in revenge. (Although Nocturne would return many times after presumed deaths.) Paine resumed his career as the Black Fox, with a new dedication to fight crime and, later, with full-fledged membership in the First Line.
Paine served with the First Line throughout its tenure, including its reorganization after the team was disbanded at the same time as the Watergate scandals. During one clandestine mission to the Middle Eastern country of Halwan, however, the First Line found themselves used as a diversionary tactic by the government to destabilize the current Halwan regime. Paine quit the team in disgust, and the First Line appeared to have disbanded entirely at this point.
Paine resurfaced as Doctor Robert Paine, professor of law at Northwestern University in Chicago. He was sought out by Truth MacRae, a long-time fan of the Black Fox, who enrolled in college to be in Paine’s life. However, when Paine failed to recognize her as more than a student, MacRae created the costumed identity of Gadfly. Presumably, Gadfly performed many acts of petty and thrill-seeking villainy, in order to force the Black Fox to come out of retirement and fight her.
Later still, Paine was among those heroes recruited by the First Line to defend Earth against an invasion by the alien Skrulls. Somehow, Paine managed to escape the devastation that destroyed the Skrull fleet and decimated his team. He resumed his retirement, although he still maintained contact with the surviving members of the First Line.
In more recent times, Paine discovered the Yankee Clipper had not been killed, merely shunted into the future, and the two heroes reunited. Presumably, Paine continues to enjoy his retirement.
