Many years ago the Green Lantern Jewelius Blak journeyed to the distant planet Korugar in order to find a new recruit to the pan-galactic police force, the Green Lantern Corps. She found a promising young being named Sinestro, who was inducted and quickly demonstrated his considerable talent and enthusiasm. Sinestro desired to bring absolute order to the people of Sector 1417 (the region of the Universe he was charged with protecting.) Alas, his zeal for order led him down the path to dictatorship. Korugar, his homeworld, became an absolutist state where the worship of Sinestro was mandatory.

The Guardians of the Universe, the race of beings who created the Green Lantern Corps. and their wondrous power rings, were unaware of this corruption of their noble intentions. When an impulsive human named Hal Jordan became the successor to Green Lantern Abin Sur, the Guardians chose Sinestro to instruct him in the uses and responsibilities of his new-found might. Jordan profited greatly from Sinestro’s instruction, and journeyed to planet Korugar with his master after a disturbing period of silence. There, the two discovered that the people of the planet had risen against their oppressive master, and were being led by Katma Tui, once an ardent follower of Sinestro.

The uprising would surely have been ruthlessly and murderously crushed had not Hal Jordan defied his master and defended the Korugians. The heroic young man managed to hold off his more-experienced teacher until other Green Lanterns, summoned by Jordan, could arrive. Sinestro was imprisoned in the Anti-Matter Universe of Qward for his crimes, and Katma Tui became a new Green Lantern.

In Qward, Sinestro encountered the infamous Weaponers. This collection of conquerors had long been opposed by the Guardians, and chose Sinestro as a weapon agains them. Sinestro was armed with a power ring of their creation, one without the prohibition against killing or the color-specific weakness of the Green Lanterns’ rings. In fact, this new ring was yellow, the very color against which the Corps. rings were powerless. Sinestro returned to the universe and set about avenging his defeat by Hal Jordan. Despite his deadly new weapon, he was outmatched by the finesse and courage of his former pupil, and again imprisoned.

Over the years, Sinestro has menaced the Green Lantern Corps. and the Guardians of the Universe many times. His main objective, though, was destroying Jordan, a challenge which he was unable to ever achieve. He has allied himself with many villains in that time, from the enslaving Zazzala the Queen Bee, to the Secret Society of Super-villains (Captain Cold, Gorilla Grodd, Mirror Master, and Star Sapphire.)

When the dread Weaponers of Qward invaded the universe in an all-out attempt to finally best their hated enemies, the Guardians, they revealed that to them Sinestro had been merely a useful but completely forgettable pawn. Sinestro refused to acknowledge it, but he knew their words were true. Still, he would not turn from the path of evil.

The Weaponers were defeated, but not long after the Monitor of the universe, and the Anti-Monitor of Qward, awoke from their billion-year hibernation. So began the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Sinestro, perhaps over-awed by the scope of these strange events, proved to be little more than a nuisance for the valiant heroes endeavoring to save all creation from destruction.

After the Crisis had ended, Sinestro remained in his revenge-driven rut. But one fateful day the Cyborg and Mongul destroyed Coast City, home of Hal Jordan. Jordan went mad from anguish, and voyaged to distant Oa, homeworld of the Guardians. There, he killed Sinestro, every Green Lantern, and all the Guardians save Ganthet, who bestowed the last power ring to a young human named Kyle Raynor. So ended the story of Sinestro.
