GOP: the Long Con Made Manifest

Posted on June 12, 2021December 15, 2022 by Robin

I had a revelation reading this post from Dan Rather. Much to my amazement, I understand the GOP now, especially its attachment to Donald Trump.

The entire Republican Party has become one massive con game.

As my wise wife has noted before, there are some young Republicans who have been immersed in the Right Wing Noise Machine for literally their entire lives, never having known any other world. Some of them are no doubt true believers, having been suckered by generations of lies.

However, for as long as I can remember, the GOP has stood against science, compromise, open-mindedness, peace, and just plain old kindness.…

Starting Small: the Orwellian Abuse of Acronyms (and Compound Words) For Fun and Profit

Posted on May 22, 2021May 22, 2021 by Robin

I’m back! It’s been a long, long interregnum, but it turns out escaping from Cubicle Prison is good for the body, mind, and soul. Who knew?

I have a lot to say, as anyone who’s followed me on Facebook can tell, but for now I want to start small. Namely, abbreviations, like acronyms and compounds. Before I dive in, I feel it is necessary to start with some honesty: the use of “antifa” and “BLM” originate with those groups, insofar as any action can be attributed to such decentralized movements. Absent malice, there is no harm in using shorthand to get to the meat of a discussion.…

The end of the beginning: this victory will do a lot of good

“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” — Winston Churchill

As the high of N7 Day’s Biden-Harris victory begins to fade, the titanic amount of work ahead can seem daunting — because it is. Even if Democrats win both of Georgia’s two runoffs to reclaim the Senate by a hairsbreadth, there are still at least 71 million Americans who are okay with racism, sexism, fascism, and rampant corruption, as long as liberals cry and rich people get tax breaks.…

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst: we have to do it all

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted to Daily Kos. I joined way back during the Bush years, and wow, I never thought I’d feel nostalgic for that warmongering Alfred E. Neuman wannabe, but here we are. Yes, Bush was a terrible president, but — to paraphrase YouTube reviewer Nostalgia Critic — he was still a president, which is more than I can say for Donald the Clodfather.…

Kill the mandate, save the bill

Posted on December 17, 2009December 15, 2022 by Robin

(originally posted to Daily Kos)

Well, after yesterday’s epic rumination that did…nothing, I’m trying for something a little more straightforward. What’s wrong with the bill as-is?

Well, it’s missing quite a few things, like the public option, the Medicare buy-in, and a death panel for Lieberman’s career. It still does a lot of good stuff…but the one really BAD thing it does, as of now, is too big and bad for the current bill to be acceptable to those of us who oppose it: the mandate is a disaster that will destroy families and devastate a fragile economy. I’ll let Digby (Edit: Relevant post “Who Will Do The Fighting?”)…

Five Minutes To Midnight

Posted on September 4, 2006December 15, 2022 by Robin

It’s been too long since I’ve posted, but even with all that I’ve seen recently, this jumped out at me:

Five Minutes to Midnight: The War Is Coming, No Matter How Hard We Try to Evade It.

“This Time We Must Not Surrender Five Minutes Before Midnight.” — Adolf Hitler

The war referenced in the linked title is the supposedly necessary and inevitable pre-emptive invasion of Iran.

A Plague of Madness

Posted on July 15, 2006May 23, 2021 by Robin

Is this the beginning of the end?

I refer, of course, to the ever-widening circle of war, murder and stupidity in the Middle East. I point no fingers, because every force actively involved in the violence seems to want to inflame the other side as far as possible. Naturally, Israel has the big guns, but that’s not the problem. Unsurprisingly, the various terrorist groups who want to destroy Israel are targeting its military, but that’s not the problem either (military targets being, you know, legitimate). No, the problem is that both sides seem intent on inflicting as much misery, fear and death to their foes’ civilian populations as possible.…

The Innocent Have Nothing To Fear…Right?

Posted on April 5, 2006December 15, 2022 by Robin

Wrong.

A Homeland Security Department spokesman was held Wednesday on felony charges of sexually preying on a detective posing as a 14-year-old girl through explicit online conversations. He was quickly suspended without pay from one of the nation’s top crime-fighting agencies.

The arrest of Brian J. Doyle, 55, raised doubts about the ability of an agency responsible for safeguarding the country to ensure the security credentials of its own people.

Gee, ya think?

Of course, it can’t get much worse than this, right?…

He Said He Was A Uniter

Posted on March 27, 2006January 27, 2022 by Robin

My apologies for yet another long dearth of posts; I’ve been focusing on Street Prophets and my local group’s local blog, but I’m sharing this one around — it’s that time again — and thought it would make a good re-inauguration of the Justice Log. It certainly fits the subtitle.

Every so often, I feel compelled to return to this issue, the heart of what shows that Bush is evil — not just his administration, nor Bush himself merely incompetent — but the man himself, the puppet sitting in the Oval Office. He bears responsibility, no matter how he might try to avoid it.…

Anyone still think charges of theocracy are funny?

State bill proposes Christianity be Missouri’s official religion [1]

Missouri legislators in Jefferson City considered a bill that would name Christianity the state’s official “majority” religion.

…

The resolution would recognize “a Christian god,” and it would not protect minority religions, but “protect the majority’s right to express their religious beliefs.” The resolution also recognizes that, “a greater power exists,” and only Christianity receives what the resolution calls, “justified recognition.”
